Princess Kate has been noticeably blonder in recent months, and fans have finally learned why.
After returning from her summer break, the Princess of Wales surprised royal watchers by debuting golden blonde hair. But only days later, she appeared with her usual brunette shade again, causing even more confusion. Recently, the lighter tones have returned once more.
Now, Kate has revealed the truth behind the effortless shifts.
Kate explains her changing hair colour
According to the Daily Mail, she shared the explanation during a backstage conversation with actress Su Pollard at the Royal Variety Performance on Wednesday (November 19). Kate attended the event with Prince William, marking their first appearance there in two years.
Dressed in a striking green velvet bodycon gown, and with William matching her in a velvet jacket and bow tie, Kate accepted a compliment about her hair from Pollard. When told, “I like your hair, it looks a lot lighter,” Kate reportedly replied:
“It used to be brown, but it’s gone light in the sunshine.”
The royal certainly spent plenty of time in the sun this year. Reports claim she enjoyed a summer getaway sailing around the Greek islands with her family aboard a superyacht.
The symbolic earrings behind the look
Kate’s jewellery also sparked conversation. She paired her gown with a set of sparkling diamond chandelier earrings that carry deep royal significance.
Jewellery expert Nilesh Rakholia, speaking to Marie Claire, identified them as the Greville Chandelier Earrings. The piece includes 16 diamonds in a range of cuts – baguette, baton, emerald, pear, half-moon and square – often described as a “lexicon of modern diamond cutting.”
The earrings originally belonged to Margaret Greville and were passed down to the Queen Mother. They were later gifted to Queen Elizabeth II by her parents on her wedding day.
Wearing them at the Royal Variety was especially meaningful; the event took place on the eve of what would have been Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s 78th wedding anniversary, November 20.
Queen Camilla was also seen in a related piece this week. At the Diplomatic Corps Reception on Tuesday (November 18), she wore the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara – the same tiara famously worn by Princess Eugenie at her 2018 wedding.
