Carrie Underwood Leaves Her Judges’ Seat Mid-Episode, and the Reason Has Fans Smiling

American Idol' Season 24 Premiere Ratings and New Streaming Move, Explained

Hollywood Week is officially here, and yep, you read that right… Season 24 of “American Idol” is already pulling at our heartstrings.

Carrie Underwood

The first round from Nashville kicked off tonight, Monday, February 23, 2026 at 8:00pm ET on ABC, and while the competition is heating up, one moment completely stole the spotlight. Leave it to Carrie Underwood to remind everyone why she’s not just a powerhouse judge but also a total softie when the moment calls for it.

WARNING: This post contains spoilers for Episode 5 titled, “Hollywood Week In Music City – Part 1” of “American Idol” Season 24.

Carrie Underwood Shares the Spotlight

Before contestant Keyla Richardson’s performance, Underwood noticed someone special in the audience; Keyla’s young son, Drew. And in a move that felt very on-brand for the country superstar, she invited him to join the judges at the table.

Yes. She literally gave up her chair.

It seems like the sweetest moments on “American Idol” always happen when no one’s expecting them, and this was no exception. Drew happily took the seat while his mom prepared to perform, and the cameras caught Underwood getting visibly emotional during the performance.

At one point, she leaned in and softly whispered: “She’s doing real good right now.” Cue the collective “aww.”

Keyla’s Performance Brings the Heart

As the second contestant of the night, Keyla stepped onto the Hollywood Week stage with something to prove; and she delivered. Her rendition of “I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz (seen below) was both powerful and deeply heartfelt.

Let’s be real: that song is already emotional on its own. Add a proud kid watching from the judges table, and yeah… feelings were inevitable.

But the moment that truly sealed the deal came after the music stopped

Drew leaned into the microphone with the seriousness of someone well beyond his years and said: “You did great, mom, I mean… Your confidence! The way you just sung to the whole audience really warmed my heart,”

And honestly? We’re not crying… you are. Plus, Keyla’s response kept the wholesome energy going: “It’s for you, baby. I love you Drew Drew!”

If “Idol” was aiming for tears during Hollywood Week, mission absolutely accomplished.

Luke Bryan Keeps the Mood Light

Of course, it wouldn’t be the judges’ table without a little humor. Luke Bryan quickly jumped in with a joke about Drew potentially taking his job someday… a classic Luke moment that helped balance the emotional high.

It seems like this season is already striking that perfect mix of talent, heart, and just enough playful chaos to keep fans locked in.

Will Keyla Richardson Move Forward?

During the episode, the judges confirmed she has officially advanced to the Gold Room; a major milestone in Hollywood Week and a clear sign she impressed the panel. For now, that mother-son moment is getting the happy chapter it deserves.

But let’s be real: Hollywood Week is notorious for its brutal cuts.

Even with a Gold Room placement, Keyla isn’t fully in the clear. A massive round of eliminations is still ahead, meaning strong contestants can (and often do) get sent home before the week wraps.

So while tonight was definitely a win, her journey is far from over. Fans will have to stay tuned as Hollywood Week continues to unfold.
