“American Idol” is a family show, and sometimes that means duets that tug on your heartstrings.

In the Monday, Feb. 9, episode of the ABC competition show, country music singer and songwriter Marty Brown walked out with his 22-year-old son Christian, a delivery driver in Franklin, Kentucky – and probably the 60-year-old’s No. 1 fan.
Marty, whom Christian called “a great songwriter, a great singer and a great dad,” co-wrote Tracy Byrd’s “I’m from the Country.” So, of course, the father and son had to give judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie and Carrie Underwood a duet. Or rather, a performance that was a duet until Bryan himself joined in.
Afterward, Christian revealed his audition song is dedicated to his dad: “It’s my way of telling him I love him, too. I would not be where I am today without him,” he told the camera. As he sang Marty’s song “Wildest Dreams,” his visibly emotional dad watched proudly from next to him, occasionally looking down with a quivering lip.
“That’s my boy!” he exclaimed after Christian sang his closing notes.

The judges offered three yeses, sending the 22-year-old to Hollywood Week with the caveat that they’d like to see him bring more to the stage in the upcoming competition. “I want to hear more from your vocals,” Richie said, while Bryan told Christian, “I want to see you grow.”
Christian takes after his dad in more ways than just musically. Marty is an “America’s Got Talent” alumnus, having made it to the Season 8 semifinals in 2013.
